Katie Schuessler is an Artist, Teacher and Guide at Inner Visions. Since the very first time she ever looked through a camera, Katie was simply obsessed with “showing beauty in everything: the lovely, the horrible.” As time went on, her work opened up onto bringing awareness to social issues. As closeted painter until around 2016, it was at that time she decided to “follow my heart and take the leap of vulnerability of sharing my paintings with the world!” Working primarily in acrylic and oil on canvas, in addition to photography and writing, Katie is an artist and educator concerned with social justice. “I seek to examine the impact of self-expression on healing and growing our own humanity.” Her artwork involves her own personal healing journey in addition to inspiring others to embrace the creative process for their own healing path. Her unique work extends beyond the physical materials of paint and canvas to incorporate meditation, chanting, and yoga into the process. “These tools deepen awareness and heighten the practitioner’s ability to perceive, express, and heal themselves,” explains Schuessler. “I believe that with the development of greater compassion towards ourselves, we are better able to offer compassion to others; this is the seed of healing.” Katie currently teaches art at Brooklyn Excelsior Charter School, Yoga at Jai Yoga Arts, and makes her paintings and writes from home. When speaking to creative challenges, she names the “Bluebeards” of her mind as a stumbling block — those being the negative inner voices “who question my mission every step of the way.” Moving forward, she’s writing a manuscript based on her travels of the Middle East and dreams of opening a meditation and art space with an artist residency program, yoga space, garden, and cat. She’s currently hosting monthly “Meditation and Creation” groups which gather to explore the intersection of meditation and art-making.
