Naomi’s art practice began with an interest in choreography and movement. “This love for both the kinetic experience of moving and dancing and the visual and affective experience as a viewer have remained with me as I expanded my practice to include photography, video and experimental graphic scores.” Today, Ramirez’s main mediums are movement, dance, video and photography. Her work reflects on the performance of female sexuality and the archetypes of “bad women” perpetuated within patriarchal society. Ramirez currently works in Brooklyn, New York City, and names one of her major challenges as finding time to make and experiment in her art given financial pressures. Currently, she’s refining her new piece A Dangerous Body, a two-channel video installation that was most recently exhibited at A.I.R. Gallery during the artist’s fellowship there. Ramirez is also working on another performance piece, Ponga Cuerpo Donde Boca, which responds to our current political climate with the question: “How do we prepare ourselves to put our bodies on the line for concrete change?”
