Becoming an artist was a very natural choice for Sophie. She works in various mediums – large-scale paintings and murals, drawing, collage, installation and photography – the concept of urban jungle reverberating throughout. The “frenzied nature” and “irresistible vivacity” of New York City in contrast with the “tranquil” Danish city where she grew up informs her practice greatly, in particular, the interplay between public and private spaces. As a flâneur, she explores urban settings and home interiors, ultimately synthesizing them into dreamy constellations. Transforming fashion storefronts or living rooms into colorful organic landscapes, Staerk’s visual world is one in which whole streets and interiors become abstract fields and fantasy-scapes, dotted with exotic vegetation. Abstraction meets figuration, reality meets fiction, and city life and nature collide. Staerk works in West Chelsea, New York City, and spends summers in Denmark. She’s currently working on a collage for a graphic book, her own artist book, a photo project and paintings for a courtroom. After that, the focus will shift to large-scale, black-and-white ink drawings.
