Portrait of Jeff Kingery (Thriller), 2017

Daniel Kingery

Oil painting came naturally to artist Daniel Kingery. “I think, like a lot of artists, I wanted to elicit the feelings in others that certain artworks elicited in me.” His work is about the self, probing with questions like who are we and what makes us who we are? “The music we listen to or the ways we interact with the world become masks or proxies for the self,” remarks Kingery. Working out of his studio space in the Bronx for the past 5 years, his greatest artistic challenge has been knowing himself and finding his own artistic voice. “Since I’ve come to have a clear artistic vision, it’s been finding the time to execute it…my projects occupy me for years at a time. It’s just a matter of getting them done.” With his iPhone self-portraits and related paintings in process, he’s also working on a sound and video installation with Nathan Wells, which details Wells’ experiences in the Iraq War. Additionally, Kingery is working on a full-length feature film called “Down to The Valley Below” about a man living a double life in the art world and losing all sense of identity.
