“I was born into this identity and have no other option but to loyally run with it, to continue developing it,” says Kelly on being an artist. “It’s my utmost passion and duty to do so.” Her earliest memories revolve around creativity – stringing together songs or fantasy stories, making jewelry, dressing up in a funky way, or creating “stews” with flowers and weeds. Her process became much more refined in adulthood, but Kelly is nonetheless still committed to “running wildly” with her artistry and keeping the inner-girl-child intact. An interdisciplinary artist, Kelly’s primary form is performance art, through which she expresses in stories and sound experimentation infused with poetry, hip-hop and opera. She combines this work with site-specific ritual, sculpture and play. Her work is about reclaiming the Divine Feminine, her body, her healing, relationship to the spiritual, personal feminism and authentic self-expression. In this realm she also takes on the monikers bruja, alien, bunny and shaman. Ideally, her work models “integrating new methods of being that encourage me/women to live in a BO$$-state of self-love and self-designed success.” She loves to work in nature and has a bold, colorful aesthetic. Currently, Kelly lives and works in Costa Rica. “I left Brooklyn behind years ago for a more tranquil life,” she reflects, and intends for Costa Rica to be her base for a while. Her greatest artistic challenges? Kelly says: “Full disclosure? Money! More full disclosure? PTSD.” Both at times interfere with her ability to create. Kelly muses, along the road to financial freedom, “Can you imagine how your own self-love strengthens because you’re operating with more flexibility, access, and emotional balance?” She has an on-going performance art project called new/mind/ritualz. Her first short film we were baby armadillos… is set to debut sometime this year, meanwhile she’s working to grow her “indigenous glam” Etsy audience, new instagram account, as well as expand the items she makes for sale including clothing, art prints and zines. She’s also plotting a durational performance piece of 11 hours in length. “2018 is a year for lots of blooming,” says Kelly.
