Michelle Sui

Michelle Sui stumbled upon experimental theatre-making at a young age, and later, on on postmodern dance and music that would greatly influence her work. Raised by a community of fierce female artists, Michelle says becoming an artist “wasn’t really a choice,” yet admits, “Perhaps it’s a choice to keep doing it now, despite everything.”

Her work succeeds in bringing together artists from different disciplines – each with their distinct vocabularies and ways of seeing – together to create rich new languages. Language in translation and the female body as geography are two themes of her work. Currently based in Los Angeles, Sui makes frequent trips back to NYC (her former base) and travels frequently. Upcoming projects will land her in Detroit, Berlin and Paris. This year she founded a curatorial platform called Nü House, which produces digital content, pop-up performance events, and connects feminist artists in different cities around the world. Michelle’s recent work, Medea at Sunset, is an explosive, experimental dance opera musing on the Medea archetype within the context of the current political state in America and the global refugee crisis.
