In a world experiencing unprecedented levels of chaos, Rooted In Place – a solo show by Louisiana-based artist Kathryn Keller – feels like an antidote and an anchor. As if making a quiet bid for the timeless connection between women and the environment, the artist’s humble display of oil and watercolor paintings feels as refreshing as feet barefoot in the grass.
As if harkening back to an ancient era when trees were seen as relatives, rather than resources, Kathryn Keller’s impressive array of new landscapes and interior scenes reaffirms the potency of painting from life. Just as artificial intelligence slops its way into seemingly every crevice of human existence, and humanity question the meaning and value of Art as never before, Keller’s steady hand and opulent lens on the natural world show us a simpler way.
An artist celebrated for her southern landscapes, Keller’s paintings depict scenes at home, including the 3,000 sprawling acres of her family’s farm in Alexandria, Louisiana and the majestic biodiversity of Louisiana state parks.
Probing deeper than form while celebrating its aesthetic contours, what carries through Keller’s entire body of recent work is that her paintings express both the exquisite beauty of physical surroundings and the graceful energy of her working method.
It’s refreshing to see an artist lay down the intellectual arrogance, the conceptual amor, the promise of the extraordinary and the outsized. A daily painter, there is little pretense in these artworks, just canvases teeming with skill and feeling.
In her biography, the 74-year-old artist pledges to “Paint every day from wherever she is in the world.” In her artist statement, Keller reflects on the moments of bliss inherent to painting, her love of the smell of the paint itself, the anticipation and the visceral quality of the act of creation.
While her early work focused on nature, myth, family life, birth and death – Keller only began painting exclusively from life in her late forties. Over the past years, she has excelled in her depiction of urban cityscapes, pastoral naturescapes and domestic interiors.
During this time, she also began to work exclusively in oil and watercolor, while becoming known for her elegant depictions of rural Louisiana.
With her eye on wide open spaces, pastoral state parks or domestic settings filled with objects aching with stories to tell – Keller’s works prove comforting in their apparent indifference to trend. Swept away only by the turn of seasons,
Keller’s known to battle the elements as she paints from life armed solely with her easel, sunhat and paintbrush. Often suffering intense summer heat and relentless flies – her vision prevails as the artist gently trains future generations to see through her eyes.
In addition to sprawling, large-scale oil landscapes depicting Keller’s family farm across the seasons, Rooted in Place includes softer watercolors symbolic of the interior of her home. With her watercolors characterized by their magical fluidity and the quaint charm of the familiar, these smaller works on paper illuminate the difference between domesticity and the domestic, depicting hidden gems within the household like clues in a page-turning mystery novel.
Leading titles like “Naked in Winter” and “Establishing A Relationship” not only have a disarming quality, they usher the mind into its own thorny crevices and buds of emotional renewal.
Kathryn Keller received her BA in Fine Art and English from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, before going on to study at the Arkansas Arts Center, The Arts Student’s League of New York City and the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts.
In addition to achieving distinguished gallery representation in Louisiana, Atlanta and New York City, Keller’s work in recent years has become highly sought after by museums.
