Yoshi Sodeoka

Yoshi always liked to draw as a child. His parents took note and put him into oil painting school where he grew up, in Yokohama city. He never made a conscious decision to become an artist, but was rather always immersed naturally in creative environments. In the early 90s, he moved to NYC. Today he is perhaps best known for video art and also makes prints that are an extension of that practice. He works from his studio in Tribeca. Psychedelic” is a word often used to describe his videos, although he disavows the term’s association with drugs. However he’s happy to report that “Psychedelic” means something different in the internet age. “Whatever that means, I’m fine by it,” says the artist. “I like the idea of making art that’s universally understandable, something appealing directly to people’s senses, not being obstructed by languages or any personal beliefs.” In other words, “What you see is what you get.” Currently, Yoshi’s slowly working on a new book project, which will be a collection of his abstract, conceptual video prints. He’s also creating some video art segments for a feature film (but that’s top secret!).
